How is VOSB and WOSB certification affecting subcontracting now?

Major prime contractors often seek qualified WOSB and VOSB firms to strengthen their supplier base, support subcontracting goals, and build more competitive teams. In a supplier notice, the company stated that effective February 1, 2026, businesses claiming VOSB or WOSB status must obtain official SBA certification to remain properly validated. Leidos also made clear that self-certification is no longer sufficient under current federal rules and that failure to certify may lead to loss of socioeconomic designation, ineligibility for contracts or subcontracting opportunities tied to that status, and possible future procurement impact.
That is a real-world example of why certification matters beyond compliance. It directly affects how easily your business can be recognized, counted, and considered within a prime contractor’s supplier network.
And this is not limited to one contractor. It reflects a broader shift across the federal contractor market. Verified status now matters more, and firms that wait to address certification may find themselves at a disadvantage when subcontracting opportunities arise.

Let me tell you — government paperwork is no joke. I went into this SDVOSB certification process fully expecting to lose at least 3 brain cells and my will to live somewhere between page 47 and form 18B. Then came Ashley.
