Congress Passes $1.2 Trillion Infrastructure Spending Bill

Infrastructure spending plan includes roads, bridges, ports, rail transit, safe water, the power grid, broadband internet, and more.

The new infrastructure $1.2 trillion spending plan passed Congress on November 5, 2021 promises to reach almost every corner of the country and the economy. These infrastructure projects are projected to create two million jobs per year over the coming decade.

Billions of dollars will be spent across industry sectors, including:

$110 billion for roads and bridges. In addition to construction and repair to U.S. roads and bridges, the funding will help pay for transportation research at universities, “congestion relief” in American cities, and other major transportation programs.

$66 billion for passenger and freight rail. Funding for upgrades and maintenance of Amtrak’s passenger rail system, high-speed rail, and freight rail safety.

$65 billion for the electric power grid. Funding for updates to power lines and cables, as well as money to prevent hacking of the power grid. Clean energy funding for environmentally friendly smart-grid technology.

$65 billion for broadband internet access. Funding to expand broadband in rural areas and in low-income communities to help ensure every American has access to high-speed internet, with approximately one-in-four families eligible for a $30 per month subsidy for internet.

Billions of dollars will be spent across industry sectors

$55 billion for water infrastructure. Funding for lead pipes and service lines replacement, chemical and industrial cleanup, and money to provide clean drinking water in tribal communities.

$47 billion for cybersecurity and climate change. Funding to protect infrastructure from cybersecurity attacks and address flooding, wildfires, coastal erosion, and droughts along with other extreme weather events.

$39 billion for public transit systems. Funding for upgrades and modernized systems for public transit nationwide. The allocation also includes money to create new bus routes and help make public transit more accessible to seniors and disabled Americans.

$25 billion for airports. Funding for major upgrades and expansions at U.S. airports, including air traffic control towers and systems.

$21 billion for the environment. Funding to clean up superfund and brownfield sites, abandoned mines, and old oil and gas wells.

$17 billion for port infrastructure. Funds for the Army Corps of Engineers for port infrastructure. Additional funds would go to the Coast Guard, ferry terminals, and reduction of truck emissions at ports.

$15 billion for electric vehicles. Funding to build significantly more charging stations for electric vehicles across the nation and zero-emission bus fleet replacement in low-income, rural, and tribal communities.

$11 billion for highway & road safety. Funding to address highway, pedestrian, pipeline, and other safety areas, including new programs to help states and localities reduce crashes and fatalities in their communities, particularly among cyclists and pedestrians.

$8 billion for western water infrastructure. Funding for ongoing drought conditions in the western half of the country will be addressed through investments in water treatment, storage, and reuse facilities.

The spending bill contains approximately $550 billion in new spending. The $1.2 trillion figure comes from including additional funding normally allocated each year for highways and other infrastructure projects.
